The first night in a "big" bed is a reason for pride for the child, and for the parent it is often a night of listening to make sure nothing has fallen on the floor. That's what it's for railing for a children's bed. It does not lock the child in like in a bed, but protects the child from rolling around during sleep. We advise you when it is worth putting it on, how to choose the length and when you can take it off.

When is a bed rail needed?

The barrier is especially useful during periods transition from a baby cot to a regular bed. Children sleep restlessly, turn and move around the entire mattress, and yet do not "feel" the edge of the bed like adults do.

It is worth considering a barrier when:

  • the child moves from a bed with slats to a single or low bed,
  • the child sleeps very agilely or has already fallen out of bed,
  • the bed stands free, not against the wall,
  • the child sleeps in a new place, for example at the grandparents' house or in the guest room.

Even with low bed the barrier makes sense. A fall from a low height is usually not dangerous, but it can wake up and frighten the child, which means a sleepless night for the whole family.

Railing, bunk beds and loft beds

The protection we are writing about is used for beds standing on the floor: low, single and the lower level of bunk beds. Upper levels of bunk beds and loft beds they have their own permanent railings that are part of the structure. We write in the article about the age at which a child can sleep higher Is a loft bed safe for a child?.

How to choose the length of the railing?

The railing does not have to cover the entire side of the bed. It's best when it protects the middle and upper parts of the mattress, i.e. where the child's torso and head sleep, and there is free space at the legs to get in and out of the bed. Thanks to this, the child can get up on his own at night, for example to go to the toilet, without having to go through the railing.

In practice, a railing that covers approximately half the length of the bed works well. Our wooden protection has length 80–100 cm and 37 cm height. It protects the child and at the same time does not lock him in like in a bed. You can find the exact dimensions on the product card.

The protection fits all beds Nizio, so you can also buy them later, for the bed you already have at home.

Wooden or fabric barrier?

In stores you will find barriers made of mesh, fabric or plastic. Wooden railing has several advantages:

  • it is stiff, so it does not bend when the child leans on it,
  • looks like part of the bed, not a temporary addition,
  • it can be matched to the color of the furniture: we have white, gray, black, pine, natural and bleached oak versions and in RAL/NCS color,
  • it is finished smoothly, without sharp edges, and the coating is safe in contact with the child.

Our barrier can be put on and taken off many times without losing stability. This is convenient when passing the bed from a younger child to an older one or when changing the room arrangement.

How to use the barrier safely?

  1. Check the mounting after installation and from time to time thereafter. The barrier should be stiff and should not move.
  2. Adjust the mattress to bed. There should be no gaps between the mattress and the bed frame where a child could slip an arm or leg.
  3. Do not overhang blankets, strings or toys with long parts through the barrier.
  4. Place the bed against the wall the other side, if possible. Then one rail protects the entire bed.
  5. Place a rug next to the bed. This is additional protection when your child gets out of bed sleepy.

When to remove the barrier?

There is no single date. The railing can be removed when the child has not come close to the edge of the bed at night for several weeks and can easily get up and go back to bed on its own. For many children it's a few months after moving into a big bed, for others it's a little longer. It is worth doing a "trial" on the weekend and observing how the baby sleeps.

Good news: if the bed is large enough, it will serve your child for years to come without a railing. We write in the article how to choose a bed that will last for years how to choose a children's bed according to the child's age.
